from what I've seen it's based on level and division but not sure how it works out or any of the numbers.

Based on division only. Better your division. better the rewards.

1 is considered "higher" then 18 in regards of FL divisions, not lower. The higher div you are in, the better rewards you get for observing.

i think this is written explicitly on the diary window. so it's not just pure rumor.

however, i never see any difference in rewards for spectating FL in any division whatsoever. it's always 1 exp book and 1 craft book (100k exp/wl). if you spectate titan or weekly, you get 2 of each instead.

i suspect that diary text is false at the moment. for example, what it says about send challenge (that you will get rewards by doing so) is also not true.

How come I won 5 gold coins today from 5 challenges then?

seriously? do you know exactly what's the condition? i remember trying it for myself when it comes out, it got nothing. do i have to bet some money? do they have to click accept challenge pop-up (instead of click the top right icon)?

It all depends on your lvl / div for challenges
I made 35 atlantis copper coins for a win at lv 98 div 6
also 35 coin shards at a win for lv 38 div 14

From what I read, I have a feeling, that you mix things together.
Let's put this clear.
Divisions are 18 to 0.
18 is lowest. 0 is highest.
There are different rewards for PLAYING Free leagu, autobattle freeleague or championship.
But the rewards are always atlantis coins or coin shards.
If you win, then you receive more coins, if you loose, you receive less coins.
If you are in higher division (closer to 0) you get more coins than in lower divisions.

For SPECTATING/OBSERVING. The reward is always an experience book and craft book.
No coins for spectating. The reward depends on your league ranking or character level (not really sure about this, because as I level, I also get higher in divisions).
It does not matter if you observe div 1 fight or div 18 fight. The reward is always the same.
Rewards are better for observing Titan championship.
